hi there i keep hearing people mention using linux for cnc so did a few searches and saw the above items, just wondering if this would be suitable to run on my diy table with nema 23 motors and Dm556 drivers, at the moment i only have a chinese hf plasma but that will be getting upgraded after the table is complete.

The MP3700 is a front end (logic) controller with our ultra fast DTHC 5 and comes with the new mini PC preloaded with Linux OS, CommandCNC, 3 drawign/CAD programs and a Demo copy of SheetCAM . If you have a license you can use it , if not you need to purchase one (about 165.00) for doing the toolpaths (cut files) and be able to take advantage of our plasma automation features. You also need a 4 port hub . The MP3700 is self contained and has its own low voltage supply for the logic and has the full range of isolated inputs (16) and built in relay outputs (2 aux AC outlets ) The DTHC5 includes the external remote pickup (PWMIIA) that fires the torch and gets the voltage and arc ok in, but it needs a Connection Kit to interface to specific plasma cutters. The easiest is the Hypertherm Powermax line with a machine torch . It comes with the round CPC connecor and internal voltage divider so its a single cable plug and go solution .

A Chinese HF start Plasma is not recommended and we can't guarantee it will not cause problems

You can furnish the DC power supply , AC fuses and switches and use descreet stepper driver modules. They need to have the normal Step & direction inputs that work from 5V logic. They may be named "pulse" and CW/CCW but they are the same. .

The DM556 drivers will work fine. The have opto input PULSE and DIR so you tie the - side of both inputs to the COM line for that axis and set the MTA250 polarity jumper to GND (default) Don't run the drivers at the full spec so try to keep you motor current in the 3 - 4 A range . a 48V supply probably needs to be turned down to about 46 or back EMF from the motors could drive it over the 50V max they list. I cant address the mechanical parts of the build other than to say the total weight of the gantry plays a strategic role in the performance of your table based on a given motor size and the transmission ratio between the motor and pinion. While you are after speed for plasma you always trade Torque (acceleration) and resolution for speed. A direct drive is cheap and fast BUT can't move a heavier gantry as good and resolution is not as good. The perfect ratio of a belt reduction is one that cancels the speed gain of the pinion gear. Its PI (3.142 X the DP of the gear. A 1" gear has a 3.14circumference and it moves your load that distance in one full rev .

So to review voltage on a motor gives you RPM . Current (amps) gives you force (torque) . Because of inductance of the coils in th emotor the faster you step the motor the less torque it has. Its somewhat linear on most motors until you hit about 60% of max RPM (about 1200 RPM on most smaller motors ) Since the current is limited byt he driver for each step so is the motor torque.
